Abstract

Effects of well-being, happiness and hope on longevity

Effects of Well-Being, Happiness, and Hope on Longevity

As we know from numerous studies Well-Being, Happiness, Hope and Health are closely interconnected and interacting in many ways. According to the constitution preamble of the World Health Organization of 1948, health is defined as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely as the absence of disease or infirmity. If we define health in this way, the question arises how to ascertain well-being. To summarize the manifold publications on this question we may recognize two major traditions of explanation. One tradition has its origin in the publication “A Theory of Health” presented by the American philosopher of science, technology, and medicine, Caroline Whitbeck.  She understands health as the ability to act or participate autonomously and effectively in a wide range of activities. The other tradition has its basis in Lennard Nordenfelt’s book “On the Nature of Health”.  The Swedish philosopher defines health with a person’s ability to achieve “vital goals”, whereby these vital goals are “a state of affairs that is necessary for the realization of this person’s state of minimal long-term happiness”. Hope is the indispensable fertile ground for the autonomous development of a joyful life in all its facets. Therefore hope, happiness and well-being all together are essential for a healthy flourishing longevity.
